The outdoors is a rich environment for supplying stimulation for imaginative play. Allowing children lots of time outside is key to the encouraging this creative play to happen.
Providing materials and opportunities that allows them to visualise themselves in these make-believe situations is key. When playing in this way children learn to listen to others and join in conversation as part of their ‘role’ in the scenario.
In addition to the obvious role play opportunities offered by small wooden vehicles, they also provide young children with the opportunity to develop their physical strength. Climbing, clambering and balance are just a few of the skills developed as children seek out the wooden shapes in their play environment.
