Oh I do like to be beside the seaside…
The sand play area creates a great, forever-changing space for play. Where possible we like to build large, open sandpits into which children can fit their whole body and which allow for many children to play at any one time.
Sand is a wonderfully versatile material that is very responsive to children’s interests, making it an especially important element of early year’s provision outdoors. Sand provides a sensory experience which is a great means from which children learn physical, cognitive and social skills. Self-directed play with sand and other loose materials such as water, pebbles and plant materials play a vital part in developing a child’s understanding of maths, science and language skills.
